How to do it
- A drop-2 voicing is made by taking a close chord and dropping its 2nd-highest voice an octave; the result sits on four adjacent strings.
- Play the four shapes in the TAB low to high: each has a different bass note (1st inv, 2nd inv, 3rd inv and root position).
- Say which note is in the bass of each shape (E, G, B, C): they all still sound like C maj7.
Variations
- Try the same 4 inversions as Cm7 or C7: lower the 7th and/or the 3rd in each shape.
Tips
- Drop-2 voicings on the top four strings are the most useful jazz comping voicings.
