How to do it

  1. Play A major (E shape at 5) then A minor: lower the 3rd (string 3) by one fret. Hear how the character changes.
  2. Do the same with the A shape: C major (barre at 3) → C minor, lowering the 3rd (string 2) by one fret.
  3. Repeat the change several times: memorise which finger raises or lowers the 3rd in each shape.

Tips

  • The 3rd is the only note that tells major from minor: the root and the 5th are the same in both chords.
