Identify dominant chords
What to do
Advanced progressions, dictation and analysis exercises.
- Step 1A dominant seventh chord will sound: listen to its characteristic tension.
- Step 2Identify its root and notice the chromatic note acting as a leading tone (in D7, the F#).
- Step 3Decide which degree it resolves to: for example D7 as V7/V points to G, not to the tonic C.
- Step 4Confirm your answer and repeat until you recognise secondary dominants within a progression.
