What to do

Advanced progressions, dictation and analysis exercises.

  1. Step 1A dominant seventh chord will sound: listen to its characteristic tension.
  2. Step 2Identify its root and notice the chromatic note acting as a leading tone (in D7, the F#).
  3. Step 3Decide which degree it resolves to: for example D7 as V7/V points to G, not to the tonic C.
  4. Step 4Confirm your answer and repeat until you recognise secondary dominants within a progression.
