Recognise chords with extensions
What to do
Chords with a ninth and a thirteenth (maj9, 9, m9, 13) on top of the seventh.
- Step 1A chord with extensions (maj9, 9, m9 or 13) will sound: listen to it whole, with the colour the top note adds.
- Step 2Identify the base (major, dominant or minor seventh) and then the extension that adds the colour on top.
- Step 3Remember the ninth gives brightness and the thirteenth a warm colour over a dominant.
- Step 4Confirm your answer and repeat on any root until you recognise the extensions at once.
