What to do

Chords with a ninth and a thirteenth (maj9, 9, m9, 13) on top of the seventh.

  1. Step 1A chord with extensions (maj9, 9, m9 or 13) will sound: listen to it whole, with the colour the top note adds.
  2. Step 2Identify the base (major, dominant or minor seventh) and then the extension that adds the colour on top.
  3. Step 3Remember the ninth gives brightness and the thirteenth a warm colour over a dominant.
  4. Step 4Confirm your answer and repeat on any root until you recognise the extensions at once.
