What to do

Aural and visual recognition of intervals.

  1. Step 1Listen to the interval and notice its clean, stable openness, without the friction or warm colour of thirds or sixths.
  2. Step 2Decide whether it is a perfect fourth (5 semitones), a perfect fifth (7 semitones) or a perfect octave (12 semitones).
  3. Step 3Hint: the fifth sounds wide and solid like a power chord; the octave is the same note repeated higher.
  4. Step 4Confirm your answer and repeat until you tell the three sizes apart with confidence.
