Practise interval inversions

Aural and visual recognition of intervals.

1. Step 1Listen to the interval and identify its number and quality (for example, major third or minor sixth).
2. Step 2Apply the rule of 9 to deduce its inversion: subtract the number from 9 and change the quality for its complement.
3. Step 3Hint: a major third (C–E) inverts into a minor sixth (E–C); 3 + 6 = 9 and major becomes minor.
4. Step 4Confirm your answer and repeat with thirds and sixths until you master the complementary pairs.
