Recognise jazz seventh chords
What to do
Advanced progressions, dictation and analysis exercises.
- Step 1A jazz seventh chord (maj7, m7, 7 or m7b5) will sound; listen to it whole.
- Step 2Tell the quality from the third and the seventh: maj7 and 7 have a major third; m7 and m7b5, a minor one.
- Step 3Think of its role within a ii-V-I (m7 as ii, 7 as V, maj7 as I).
- Step 4Repeat until you quickly recognise the four qualities within a progression.
