Identify diminished chords
What to do
Advanced progressions, dictation and analysis exercises.
- Step 1Listen to the chord that sounds and decide whether it is a diminished seventh (dim7).
- Step 2Remember that the diminished 7th divides the octave into equal parts: that is why it sounds symmetric and ambiguous.
- Step 3Think how this same sonority can be respelled enharmonically to resolve into different keys.
- Step 4Confirm your answer and repeat to get used to the pivot sound of enharmonic modulation.
