Identify chord tones
What to do
Melodic dictation and chord trainer in context.
- Step 1Look at the chord sounding and spell out its notes: root, third, fifth and, if it has one, seventh.
- Step 2Listen to the melody note and decide whether it coincides with any note of the chord.
- Step 3If it coincides, it is a chord tone (a stable point); if not, it is a decoration from outside the chord.
- Step 4Confirm your answer and repeat until you recognise the chord tones confidently.
